The Internet of Things gathers steam. The tentative calculations indicate the explosive growth of devices connected and controlled by the Internet – it is said that the number of IoT devices will rise from 30 billion in 2020 to 75 billion in 2025. In this article, we want to present a few displays for IoT devices that are not only flair but also cost-effective.

It seems that the best choice for each IoT application would be OLEDs. Firstly, they are energy-efficient as they do not require a backlight (each pixel of the display is an independent source of light). This feature also affects the thickness of the entire modules – they are ultrathin (even less than 1 mm). Secondly, the presented content is perfectly readable due to indefinite contrast ratio and viewing angles. Thirdly, compared with other displays’ technologies, OLEDs distinguish by the swift response time – even less than 10 µs at 25°C (the animation in 100 FPS plays smoothly).However, the critical drawback of OLEDs is the price. Below you can find a few cost-effective alternatives.

Displays for wearables

No doubt, the great potential for IoT is in telemedicine (in this case also called IoMT – Internet of Medical Things). There is a high demand for wearables that are remotely monitoring the health state of the patients (as heart monitors or blood pressure monitors). If there are any anomalies in the patient’s vital processes, the health service will get a notification.

The wearables should be not only eye-pleasing but also convenient in use. One of the most important features is the full viewing angles to provide the readability of the content from any perspective. In this case, we can use the LCDs – for monochrome displays in MVA technology and colorful displays in IPS technology. Both provide the indefinite viewing angles. However, the beneficial price of LCDs is gained by some technological limitations. In essence, it concerns e.g., the contrast ratio and the temperature range. It is also worth noticing that LCDs require a backlight – that’s why they may not be applied in the wearables which are powered with batteries.

Energy-efficient e-paper

The best choice for applications that need to be extremely energy-efficient is EPDs (Electronic Paper Display, e-paper). The e-papers consume electricity only when the displayed content is changing. We can say that there are some similarities between electronic and traditional paper – they are characterized by common features such as e.g., full viewing angles. However, the readability of the content presented on the e-paper display is guaranteed only in the proper lighting. In some circumstances, it may require an additional source of light (e.g., a single LED). Nevertheless, e-paper is still an up-and-coming and the most expensive technology.

Displays for smart home

The “smart home” is more and more present in our daily life. Today we can remotely manage our houses – control the lighting and heating, turn on and off washing machines, open and close the doors or gates.

We can do it by using control panels usually mounted on the walls. As they are always operated in the sightline, we can provide the readability of displayed content with TN LCDs with 12 o’clock viewing angles. The required backlight is not a problem – the control panels are usually powered from the mains (then the energy-saving requirements are not so restrictive).

The LCD-TFTs can also be integrated with touch panels (capacitive or resistive). You can also provide additional protection as Anti-Fingerprint (AF) coating which keeps the surface of the display clean – no contaminations adhere to the display.
